Mars Argo v. Titanic Sinclair refers to a Los Angeles County Superior Court lawsuit in which singer-songwriter Brittany Alexandria Sheets sued former duet partner and boyfriend Corey Michael Mixter, as well as his then-partner Moriah Rose Pereira, due to copyright infringement and domestic violence. With the lawsuit, Sheets is seeking copyright and personal abuse damages, as well as a domestic violence restraining order.

The first court hearing for the case took place on May 8th, 2018. The second hearing was held on July 12th. The third hearing was held on August 22nd. The fourth hearing was held on September 14th. The lawsuit was filed at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse.[1]

On September 14th, 2018, the lawsuit was dropped due to reaching an agreement on both sides.

Background[]

In December 2016, a now-inactive member of the 'We Are Poppy' Discord community hacked into the email accounts of Titanic Sinclair, resulting in the eventual leaks of songs such as "Be Easy" and "Hear Me Out", along with private messages between him and Mars Argo, revealing infidelity and physical abuse. This caused outrage among fans of Argo, and many of them continued to attempt to expose Sinclair using these messages on Twitter and on forum websites such as GagaDaily throughout 2017.

Lawsuit[]

Argo filed a lawsuit against Sinclair on April 17th, 2018, confirming fan suspicion and the legitimacy of the messages with recounts of Sinclair breaking into her Los Angeles apartment on multiple occasions after their romantic and professional separation in 2014 and 2015. The documents of this lawsuit were leaked through news publication, TMZ, by Argo's lawyer, containing screenshots of her and Sinclair's text messages, concerning social media postings and photographs of Sinclair violently smashing wine glasses in the kitchen of her home.[2]

A copyright infringement portion of the lawsuit also contains photo comparisons of Sinclair's then-current project, Poppy, compared to the Mars Argo project, among many other examples. Argo references planning to release solo music under the name Guppy before Sinclair wrote his own song under the same title. She also takes note of Sinclair's then-friend, Garrett Borns, selling candy pill bottles at concerns after she had already begun working on the exact same concept for solo merchandise.[3]

After a long wait by fans, Poppy responded to the lawsuit on Sinclair's behalf by stating that Argo's claims were false and that she was abused by Argo's current collaborator Josh Moran.[4] It was soon revealed that Poppy and Sinclair's restraining order requests against Moran were denied, with no evidence to support Poppy's claims,[5] and only a video of Moran hitting Sinclair outside his home.[6] Some fans of Argo now theorize that Moran hit Sinclair in an attempt to defend Argo, but this is unconfirmed.

On September 14th, 2018, a document was issued stating that the lawsuit was settled out of court and that the parties of Titanic Sinclair and Moriah Pereira must cease referral to the Mars Argo project in any form.[citation needed] Furthermore, on January 9th, 2019, Argo shared a statement from her lawyer, Matthew Umhofer regarding the termination of the lawsuit which happened in September of the prior year. The statement revealed that Brittany Sheets had fully settled the litigation with Corey Mixter and Moriah Pereira, and has acquired full rights of the Mars Argo project. Finally, her lawyer announced that she is happy with this outcome and is ready to move forward both professionally and personally.[7]

Controversies[]

  • On May 7th, 2018, direct messages between Titanic Sinclair and a fan had been leaked publicly, evidencing him sharing unreleased Mars Argo songs and talking about his bad relationship with Sheets' family.[8] The purpose of leaking the conversation was to help Sheets' lawsuit, however, it remains unknown whether these images played any significant role in said.
  • On December 2nd, 2018, one of Poppy's previous collaborators, Grimes, released a statement about not wanting to work with Poppy anymore, claiming she "dragged [her] into a disgusting situation".[9] Shortly after this statement, Grimes proceeded to unfollow Poppy on social media and started following Mars Argo on Twitter instead.[10] However, Grimes unfollowed her afterward for unknown reasons.
  • On December 29th, 2019, Titanic Sinclair's brother, Alex Mixter, had made a post on Reddit answering questions by fans. In one of his replies, he stated that Sheets' case "never made it to court" and had "no legal basis" whatsoever.[11] The validity of this statement remains unconfirmed.

Aftermath[]

In 2023, Sinclair mocked the lawsuit, saying the situation was still "hilarious" to him. He later added he had felt apprehensive to use a white backdrop in his videos, despite him doing so in high school, prior to collaborating with Argo and Poppy.[12]

"Turns out you can't sue for copyright infringement if you own the copyright on something, so. Hey, it is what it is."
