Linden Place is the second extended play by Mars Argo. It was released to Bandcamp on March 20th, 2011, as well as to iTunes on April 4th, 2011.

Background[]

Mars Argo and Titanic Sinclair began working on a follow up to their debut studio album Technology Is a Dead Bird in 2010, which would eventually become Linden Place.

The EP seems to mainly center around Argo's family life and her relationship with Sinclair. Its title is named after a street in their hometown of Saginaw, Michigan, which was also the address Grocerybag Media was based in.

Release and promotion[]

The EP's official title was first revealed by Argo in a now-deleted Facebook post from November 21st, 2010, announcing a scheduled December release date.[1] However, this deadline was not met, as the release received an unexpected delay. Throughout this year, Argo posted multiple song lyrics to her social media in order to promote tracks recorded during the extended play's development.

Linden Place was promoted with the Computer Show episodes "Art Is Easy", which was released on January 19th, 2011, and featured an instrumental clip of "A-Okay",[2] followed by "Do You Ever Feel Empty?" on January 28th, 2011, which featured an instrumental clip of "Using You".[3] A February 2011 release date for the EP was mentioned in the "Do You Ever Feel Empty?" video description, but this also didn't come to fruition.

A half-hour interview with Tucker Woodley was uploaded to the Grocerybag YouTube channel in promotion for the EP on March 7th, 2011,[4] and the project was finally released on March 20th, 2011.[5] The single "Love in Black and White" was released on June 7th, 2011,[6] and was then merged with the Linden Place EP on the band's Bandcamp page,[7] resulting in a fifth track added to said EP.

On July 23rd, 2015, "Formal Girl" and "A-Okay" were both removed from the Bandcamp version of the EP for unknown reasons, although its price was not changed. However, these tracks still remained on the iTunes and Apple Music releases until May 21st, 2021, when the whole release was taken down.[8]

Singles[]

"Love in Black and White" was released as a single on June 7th, 2011, three months after the original EP.[6]

A new version of "Using You" separate from the EP, remixed by producer Johnny K, was released as a single on December 21st, 2014.[9]

Proposed rejects album[]

Throughout 2010 and early 2011, Argo and Sinclair recorded many songs for Linden Place. They eventually wrote at least 20 new songs according to a February 2011 Facebook post,[10] with many of them failing to making the final cut due to not fitting sonically and being more "hip-hop" and piano-inspired.[11] The possibility of a rejects album was first mentioned in a 2010 Facebook post where Argo replied "tba" to a fan asking when the band's next album would be released.[12] She also stated in 2011 to "wait for the LP" when asked why "Electric Car" and "Spider in My Bathtub" failed to make the final cut for Linden Place.[13]

In an interview with Vocalo, which took place on September 9th, 2011, Sinclair confirmed that a full-length album would be released, containing around 12 outtakes from the aforementioned EP.[11] Later that month, he stated via Twitter that he was "so proud" of the upcoming Mars Argo record.[14]

The project was originally scheduled for a Halloween release, but no word on it was shared by either member of the duo since Sinclair's Twitter post in September, likely indicating that it was canceled sometime after its announcement. It's likely that some of the tracks from the record were later reused for the band's canceled second studio album.

Trivia[]

  • According to Wayback Machine, the order of "Love in Black and White" in the tracklisting got changed multiple times after it was merged on the EP.
    • There used to be a popular misconception that the EP cover got updated after aforementioned song got added on the EP. This was proven wrong through the Wayback Machine archives. The updated cover art was also slightly different to the single's cover art.
  • The song "Nothing Without You", released on June 19th, 2011,[15] is incorrectly considered by many as a B-side to the EP.
