"I Can Only Be Me" is the second solo single by Mars Argo. It was released on March 15th, 2023.[1][2] It is the second track on the I Can Only Be Me EP.
Background[]
On August 26th, 2022, Argo confirmed in a Tumblr post that she would show her face "with [her] next song".[3] She later posted a lyric from "I Can Only Be Me" to her Twitter and Tumblr accounts on October 25th, 2022,[4][5] exactly six months after the release of "Angry".[6]
The official title and existence of the song was confirmed in an Instagram post on March 8th, 2023,[2] when Argo shared a portal link to pre-save the song on Apple Music and Spotify.[7]
An official lyric video, animated by BRD and featuring photography from Nick Rasmussen and Kazutoshi Shimizu, was uploaded to YouTube on March 20th, 2023.[8] The lyric video was re-uploaded two days later, due to audio issues with the previous one.[9]
A music video for the song, edited by Dan Colanduno and the singer, was released to YouTube on April 20th, 2023, Argo's birthday.[10] It features a compilation of VHS footage recorded over the course of 1994 — 2002, documenting the singer's earlier life.
In October 2023, "I Can Only Be Me" reached one million streams,[11][12] which Argo celebrated by releasing a statement, thanking listeners for finding her and sharing her music, as she does not have "editorial playlisting support or anything like that". She ended her note by adding she ran over someone's foot with a shopping cart at a Korean grocery mart while "wandering around" and writing the song's melody and lyrics.[13]

In November of the same year, Argo revealed there is a reason behind "I Can Only Be Me" and "Angry" sharing cover artworks[14] and similar outros.[15]

- This song and Lick It Like A Kitten are the only Mars Argo songs to have an official Japanese translation of their lyrics.[10]
- VHS footage of a young Argo can also be seen in the 2012 Computer Show episode "The Future Is so Old".
- The song's lyric video and other Shouldicleanmyroom media feature handwriting from Argo's father.[17]
- Deezer erroneously displays clean and explicit releases of "I Can Only Be Me" respectively.[18][19] However, there are no differences between the tracks, despite the song's intro and first pre-chorus containing the word "shit".
