The debut solo album, formerly titled Guppy, refers to the upcoming debut solo album and second album overall by Mars Argo. There is currently no announced date for the album's release.
Background[]
Argo separated from then-boyfriend and creative partner, Titanic Sinclair in 2014, soon resulting in the end of their joint collaborations for the Grocerybag YouTube channel and their planned second studio album.
On April 17th, 2018, Argo filed a lawsuit against Sinclair and his then-collaborator, Poppy. In it she described the harrassment she had been experiencing from the two of them, but also had opened up on questions regarding new music, confirming that she was still in the process of recording. After the lawsuit's involved parties had reached a settlement on September 14th of that year, Argo's lawyer confirmed that she was ready to move on both "personally and professionally",[1] indicating that she would continue to work on her upcoming album. The lawsuit documents also confirmed that the project had originally been titled Guppy, which had been scheduled for a January 2016 release, but delayed.
Promotion[]
2014-16: Guppy[]
Argo announced to Tumblr on December 21st, 2014, that she had begun working on new music. She described the genre as 'death pop', in comparison to past band material she considered alternative pop music.[2] Argo posted a new demo from the project, "Momma", a few months later, on March 24th, 2015.[3]
That month, Argo worked on merchandise for the project, including a beaded 'DEATH POP' bracelet, revealed through a "Guppyfeels" Tumblr page,[4] as well as a prescription pill bottle containing 'Happy Heart' candy pills. Sinclair later discovered this plan and instructed Poppy and Børns[5] to similarly sell candy pill bottles at their concerts and merchandise sites.
On August 17th, 2015, Argo reposted a Vine previewing the song "Angry" to Tumblr,[6] suggesting that new music was on the horizon. She also created a "guppymusic" Twitter account that month, which she had followed on her "marsargo" account until May 2nd, 2021.
It was officially announced in an interview with Nylon Japan that new solo music was coming in January 2016. This, however, never came.
2017-present[]
On April 5th, 2019, Argo confirmed to Twitter that she had been "writing songs in [her] sleep again",[7] indicating a possibility of new music. On June 13th, 2019, she posted an anonymous ask to her Tumblr page which simply stated "2019",[8] potentially hinting towards a 2019 release. However, no music from her had been announced or released that year. Argo continued posting possible song lyrics to her Tumblr page throughout 2020,[9][10] and when a fan had asked her why she was "teasing" the songs, she confirmed that she was still in the process of writing them and that they were not done yet. In another answer, she confirmed that she would not be giving an announcement for new music yet because "[she] likes surprises".[11]
On April 20th, 2022, Argo's website was changed to a blank page with a single loading bar animation in the middle. Five days later, the Grocerybag YouTube channel was renamed to "shouldicleanmyroom" in promotion for the "Angry" single release and the singer's return to social media.
On June 12th, 2024, Argo launched a text subscription through Laylo, through which she is expected to release further announcements about upcoming music.[12] When calling the number, a song snippet was played. It was later revealed to be an upcoming song called “Lick It Like A Kitten” which would be released on June 24th, 2024.
Singles[]
"Angry" was released to streaming services on April 25th, 2022, following no prior announcement. This was followed by Argo changing her social media profile avatars to that of Angry's cover art, in order to promote the single. In August 2022, the song reached one million streams, which the singer celebrated on her Tumblr page.[13]
On March 15th, 2023, she released the second single, "I Can Only Be Me". The track later received an official music video, which was published on YouTube on April 20th, 2023, Argo's birthday.[14] In October 2023, the song reached one million streams,[15][16] with Argo celebrating by releasing a statement.[17]
”Lick It Like A Kitten” was released to streaming services on June 24th, 2024 being announced 3 days prior. The song was promoted using her Laylo text subscription and posting lyrics to social media.
